In the bustling heart of Mumbai, on the 27th floor of a contemporary office tower, lies a unique workspace: OFFICE@27. Designed by the renowned Sanjay Puri Architects, this 4000 sq.ft. office space seamlessly blends sustainability with innovative architectural design. A Harmonious Blend of Function and Aesthetics

One of the primary challenges for the design team was to fulfill an extensive brief from the clients, The Vibrant Group, which required the integration of six cabins, several conference and discussion rooms, and seating for 36 employees. Sanjay Puri Architects met this challenge with a clever spatial arrangement. The cabins skirt the office’s perimeter, providing privacy and focus, while the central area features open seating spaces that foster collaboration and interaction among employees. This design ensures that the office is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, catering to various work styles.

Sustainable Materials: The Heart of OFFICE@27

Sustainability is at the core of OFFICE@27‘s design ethos. The project uses a diverse palette of eco-friendly materials, each thoughtfully juxtaposed to create distinct volumes within the office. A striking feature is the sculptural ceiling made from fire-retardant paper tubes of varying diameters, interspersed with custom-made tubular lights. This ceiling not only adds visual interest but also emphasizes the use of sustainable materials in innovative ways.

The walls surrounding the central volume rise to an impressive height of 6 meters, crafted from a mix of wood, glass, cane, jute, and fabric. This blend creates an abstract yet harmonious composition that defines the office’s interior landscape. The cabins, constructed from recycled plywood strips, feature undulating patterns in both plan and section, giving each space a unique sculptural quality.

Innovative Lighting and Unique Design Elements

Lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the office’s atmosphere. In the larger conference room, a stunning installation of paper tubes of various sizes hangs at different heights, creating a dynamic and engaging visual effect. Each cabin is adorned with organic fabric lights, designed in collaboration with a lighting manufacturer, adding a bespoke touch to the space.

The breakout area towards the end of the office, overlooking Mumbai’s skyline, provides a casual setting with a bar counter and relaxed seating. This space is perfect for informal meetings or a quick respite from work, offering breathtaking views of the city.

Craftsmanship and On-Site Fabrication

Every element of OFFICE@27 was meticulously crafted on-site by a skilled team of workers, emphasizing the importance of craftsmanship in modern design. From the lime plaster walls to the custom-made furniture, partitions, and ceilings, the attention to detail is evident throughout the office. The reception area, with its monolithic fiberboard panels and foam concrete furniture, sets the tone for the entire workspace, showcasing a blend of raw and refined materials.

The use of terrazzo flooring, recycled wood, cane, jute, and paper highlights the project’s commitment to sustainability without compromising on design quality. The seamless integration of these materials creates a cohesive environment that is both functional and visually appealing.
