Salem Architecture Designs New Student Hub in Montreal

In Montreal’s Saint-Michel district, Salem Architecture has reimagined the arrival sequence and athletic facilities of Collège Reine-Marie. This project, completed in 2025, reflects the school’s vision of inclusivity, sustainability, and student well-being. By transforming the old entrance and outdated locker rooms into a modern gateway and bright training facility, the design embodies the college’s mission to support both academic and athletic development.

A Welcoming New Entrance

The former access point was characterized by steps and a temporary seasonal shelter, neither of which aligned with the school’s philosophy of openness. The new entrance introduces a canopy with a wooden ceiling, immediately creating a warm atmosphere. This element not only establishes a sense of identity but also underlines the human-centered approach of the architectural intervention.

Landscape Integration and Green Roof

The access path now follows a smooth curve that avoids obstacles while preserving a mature silver maple tree. Alongside it, a winding concrete bench provides a place for students to gather. The addition of a green roof above the expansion makes the new structure visible from Saint-Michel Boulevard, integrating it into the surrounding natural environment while also contributing to rainwater management.

Dialogue Between Old and New

The extension uses reconstituted stone, chosen for its durability and ecological value. Its matte finish ties back to the materials of the existing college façade, establishing continuity. Glazing punctuated with coloured glass panels enlivens the façade, creating a visual rhythm that resonates with the school’s identity and reinforces a strong architectural dialogue.

A Modern Fitness Facility

Inside, the project replaces outdated locker rooms with a dynamic, light-filled training room. Vibrant tones of orange and blue reflect the spirit of the Collège Reine-Marie Titans, while exposed structural elements add a contemporary rawness. The result is a human-scaled space where students can train in an environment tailored to their needs. For Salem Architecture, this project illustrates how design can quietly but powerfully shape the daily lives of students.
