Taller Di Frenna Arquitectos, the new headquarters of Di Frenna Arquitectos, stands in Colima, Mexico as both a workplace and a built manifesto of the firm’s architectural philosophy. Designed by Di Frenna Arquitectos, the project combines office spaces, collaborative areas, and experimental work environments within a composition of carefully articulated volumes. More than a typical office building, the studio functions as a place where architectural ideas are explored, tested, and refined through daily practice.
Founded and directed by architect Matia Di Frenna Muller, the studio approaches architecture through a dialogue between material expression, craftsmanship, and spatial clarity. The new building embodies these principles by transforming the architecture office into an environment where design, research, and collaboration become inseparable parts of the working process.
A Studio Designed as a Creative Workplace
The program of the building was conceived to support the multiple stages of architectural production. Open workspaces encourage communication among designers, while meeting rooms and audiovisual facilities provide areas for discussion and presentation. A dedicated model workshop supports the studio’s design process, allowing physical models and prototypes to be developed alongside digital exploration.
Instead of functioning as a conventional office, the project acts as a working laboratory. Architects move fluidly between spaces dedicated to design development, technical analysis, and collaborative review. This spatial organization reflects the studio’s belief that architecture emerges from an iterative process where experimentation and discussion are essential.
Material Expression and Architectural Language
The building is composed of a series of clearly defined volumes arranged around open spaces and circulation paths. The design emphasizes exposed materials, allowing structural and construction elements to remain visible. This approach reinforces the honesty of the building’s architectural language while highlighting the tactile qualities of each material.
Concrete, steel, charred wood, and stone form the primary material palette. These materials are used not only for durability but also for their expressive potential. Through the juxtaposition of textures and finishes, the architecture creates a layered composition that balances industrial materials with natural surfaces.
Interior Courtyards and Spatial Continuity
A sequence of interior courtyards plays a central role in the spatial organization of the studio. These open spaces introduce natural light deep into the building while providing visual relief within the dense program of offices and workshops. Vegetation and open sky create moments of pause within the working environment.
The courtyards also establish a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. Variations in light, shadow, and level generate a dynamic spatial experience, transforming circulation areas into places for informal interaction. This integration of landscape elements softens the architectural composition and contributes to a healthier working atmosphere.
Craftsmanship and Construction
The realization of the project involved close collaboration with local builders and artisans. Their work is evident in the finishing details, surface treatments, and material junctions throughout the building. The visible traces of construction reinforce the project’s commitment to craftsmanship and the value of manual expertise.
Through this collaboration, Di Frenna Arquitectos integrates contemporary design thinking with regional building traditions. The result is a studio building that serves both as a professional workspace and as a physical expression of the firm’s architectural identity. In Colima, the new headquarters of Di Frenna Arquitectos demonstrates how a studio can become a built reflection of its own creative process.
