Rue Bouret Social Housing by PietriArchitectes, Paris

Located in Paris’s 19th arrondissement, Rue Bouret is a residential project delivering 34 social housing units with a nursery on the ground floor, designed by PietriArchitectes. In a dense and heterogeneous urban context, PietriArchitectes proposes a calm and precise architectural response that balances urban continuity, material responsibility, and everyday livability.

An Urban Stitch in a Fragmented Context

Rue Bouret sits within a typically Parisian urban collage, where 1970s housing blocks coexist with townhouses and buildings from various eras. Rather than forcing a visual statement, the project adopts an integration-first strategy. The first four levels align with the existing street frontage, reinforcing the continuity of the urban fabric and clarifying the street profile.

From the fifth floor upward, the volume steps back progressively, forming a pyramidal silhouette reminiscent of Henri Sauvage’s stepped buildings. This stepped massing responds directly to daylight access, ventilation, and shadow control, allowing the building to mediate between its neighbors while maintaining a balanced streetscape.

Constructive Logic and Responsible Materiality

The entire vertical structure is built in wood, aligning environmental performance with construction efficiency. On the street side, load-bearing stone facades anchor the building within Paris’s architectural tradition, offering a sense of permanence and urban dignity.

On the courtyard side, a timber frame wall system (MOB) allows prefabrication, reducing construction time, noise, and disturbance in a dense urban environment. Concrete is limited to elements strictly necessary for stability, supporting high thermal performance while maintaining constructive sobriety.

Stepped Form as a Tool for Comfort

The project’s ziggurat-like profile is a functional device rather than a formal gesture. By receding at upper levels, the building maximizes sunlight, improves natural ventilation, and limits overshadowing of neighboring structures.

Each step creates generous outdoor spaces that act as extensions of the apartments rather than decorative balconies. These terraces provide open views and strengthen the relationship between interior living spaces and the outdoors.

Social Program and Sustainable Ambitions

The inclusion of a nursery on the ground floor strengthens the project’s local relevance, embedding essential services directly into the neighborhood. This mixed-use program supports community life while addressing the demand for affordable housing in Paris.

The project complies with the City of Paris Climate Plan and achieves RT 2012 -20% performance, demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainability.
