First things first: home surveillance systems serve many purposes aside from home security, as important as that is. Home owners nowadays install property cameras to monitor their home and check on elderly family members or watch over children. Businesses use surveillance systems to keep an eye on their inventory. Most new systems have remote access and real-time video streams that can surveillance as easy as the touch of a button. Archiving footage is important as well, home owners should be able to go back a couple of months on their video records if need be.
Be prudent in determining which home security camera systems are right for you. With all of the different uses, some systems fit certain customers better than others. Don’t buy a surveillance system that is too large in relation to the size of your home and purchasing a system too small will not cover the property well enough.
Home owners usually choose a wireless camera setup because it is easy to install and easy to relocate. Meaning the camera placement can be changed if need be. Surveillance systems usually come with a few cameras; many home owners add a couple more just to make their home more secure. A wireless system doesn’t give the messy look of complicated wires stringing through the home. Larger homes may want a wired system which can be connected directly to a DVR. Wired systems should only be installed if the cameras will be in a fixed position.
Choosing a Home Security System
Determining the right type of DVR is as important as the camera system. The DVR allows a certain number of channels that can connected from the video feed, so there is a channel for every camera. If there are channels not in use, more cameras can be added. Be conscious of the number of cameras you will need on the inside and outside of your home as well. With IP digital cameras there is a clearer video so they can cover more area with better visibility.
Remote access may be the one aspect of home security camera systems that is most overlooked. You want to be able to tap into your live camera feeds using your smartphone, laptop, or tablet. Monitor your video footage from any one of those devices helps keep a better eye on your home and much more accessible. Some security owners receive text alerts, the extent of security system access is increasing and becoming better by the year.
Keep your cameras’ footage capacity in mind. If you would like to record more footage at a higher quality then you will have to use a bigger hard drive on your DVR. There is always the option of setting the cameras only to record when there is motion detected to lengthen the period of time the cameras can record overall.
Most systems are supported by a four channel DVR and that is an adequate size for a home owner. Larger homes should seek an eight channel DVR to cover the entire home and leave no blind spots for security reasons.
