Material Innovation by Céragrès for Montreal REM

Céragrès, a Quebec-based company renowned for ceramic and stone finishes, has taken a pivotal role in shaping the architectural identity of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), Montreal’s ambitious new light-rail system. Engaged by the architectural consortium led by Lemay, Céragrès was tasked early on with material selection to ensure that each station balances visual identity with durability and accessibility.

Designing for Identity and Cohesion

The REM spans 67 kilometres with 26 stations, each linked to a unique line identity marked by colors like green, yellow, or brick red. To reflect these differences, Céragrès developed terrazzo-effect porcelain tiles and subway-inspired wall finishes, tailored in custom formats. This careful approach guarantees cohesion across the system while highlighting the individuality of each line’s architecture. The early involvement of Céragrès allowed the team to align perfectly with Lemay’s architectural vision (Céragrès).

Balancing Aesthetics with Performance

Beyond style, the technical performance of the finishing materials was paramount. Public transit spaces endure freeze-thaw cycles, heavy traffic, and strict safety regulations. To answer these demands, Céragrès introduced non-slip flooring and textured guidance tiles for visually impaired passengers, ensuring universal accessibility and long-term durability.

Engineering for Underground Challenges

Underground stations posed specific challenges, requiring innovative solutions for maintenance and structural integrity. Céragrès proposed large-format ceramic panels installed with mechanical anchoring systems, an approach more typical of exterior façades. This not only improved resilience but also facilitated easier access to hidden service spaces, addressing both safety and functionality.

A Local Company with Global Reach

The production process reflected global collaboration: floor tiles manufactured in Italy, wall tiles sourced from Germany, and centralized distribution managed from Montreal. This integration assured consistent quality across all stations. Through REM, Céragrès has demonstrated how Quebec-based expertise can drive sustainable and forward-thinking public architecture—bridging aesthetic vision with community needs while supporting contemporary urban development.
