Integrating Architecture into a Challenging Landscape
The Neville Park residence, designed by Toronto-based firm Reigo & Bauer, is situated in the east end of the city on a narrow, sloping site. The home’s design embraces the natural topography, nestled into a gully with steep slopes on both the backyard and opposite street sides. This integration with the landscape is key to the design, as the building’s vertically oriented form echoes the towering trees that frame the neighborhood’s hillside setting.
Clad in grey diamond-shaped tiles, the structure reads as a cohesive volume, its continuous cladding covering the walls, roof, and even the garage door. This treatment not only unifies the exterior but also creates an eye-catching, sculptural form that stands out while still respecting the site’s natural elements. A strategic setback on the south side of the building allows for entry steps and introduces additional windows that illuminate the home’s interior while maintaining zoning restrictions and privacy.
A Sculptural Approach to Form and Space
Reigo & Bauer are known for their innovative manipulation of form, and this is evident in Neville Park’s architecture. The roof, a standout feature, is composed of triangular facets that connect offset pitch peaks, running diagonally from the front to the back of the house. This unconventional geometry enhances the building’s dynamic visual presence and adds spatial complexity without overwhelming the restrained material palette.
The interplay of light and space is also a major theme in the design. Narrow, staggered windows on both the front and rear facades bring in natural light while ensuring privacy for the residents. In the dining room, these windows extend above the ceiling line, further emphasizing verticality. At the rear, the living room features an angled ceiling that accommodates elongated windows, directing the eye toward the wooded hill behind the house and creating a sense of openness.
Functional Interiors with Playful Details
Inside, the layout is carefully organized around a central block containing functional spaces like the powder room, pantry, and storage. This block allows the surrounding living spaces to flow together naturally without the need for doors, enhancing the sense of openness. The kitchen, positioned between the dining and living areas, is designed with minimalism in mind, featuring sleek white cabinetry that keeps the focus on the home’s sculptural elements.
While the overall aesthetic is minimalist, Reigo & Bauer have added playful, thoughtful touches throughout. A muted green wall divides the kitchen from the staircase, with pill-shaped cutouts that provide glimpses of the upper and lower levels. This design element creates a visual connection between spaces while allowing natural light to penetrate. A similarly shaped mirror adds a fun twist by reflecting views of the kitchen, contributing to the home’s dynamic yet balanced atmosphere.
Refined Material Palette and Subtle Color Accents
Neville Park’s interior finishes are deliberately neutral, offering a quiet backdrop that allows the architecture to shine. Light-toned oak floors run throughout the home, while white walls create a sense of calm and spaciousness. However, Reigo & Bauer have incorporated subtle color accents in key areas to add warmth and personality. A pale pink wall in the living room and a terracotta-hued bathroom in the primary suite provide contrast to the otherwise neutral palette, offering a refined yet playful touch.
