The Ciliwung Recovery Project won second place in the 2010 eVolo Skyscraper Competition. The design was proposed by four Indonesian architects – Rezza Rahdian, Erwin Setiawan, Ayu Diah Shanti, and Leonardus Chrisnantyo.

Project information:
Jakarta is a city of flood. Ciliwung river is one of those river in Jakarta which floods annually. Ciliwung is one of the main river in Jakarta. Starts from its upstream area in Bogor down to its downstream area in Jakarta, its length about 89km, with basin area about 347 m2. Ciliwung river is one of those river which supplies freshwater around the city it passes. The proposed site is an area called Kampung Melayu, which passed across by Ciliwung river. This area is one of the most critical slum that needs respons. Almost each year this area flooded by the river, people lived so close to the edge of the water that it narrows the river section, and gotten worse along the increase of population.

There is a correlation between the occupation of the area around the river bank and the occurance of floods in Jakarta. Another disadvantage is the contamination of water, that decreases the water quality of the river. Contamination of water happens due to human daily activities, from throwing garbages, washing to houshold waste. These activity certaily decreases its water quality, bacteria, minerals, and sediments. Since most people who live in the slums doesn’t have a proper understanding of hygiene and the sustainability of environment. Meanwhile Jakarta uses a lot amount of clean water every year, and almost the half of it are supported by the city river water resevoir, and the other half still depends on groundwater fresh water.

Riverbank is an area, that intentionally left vacant for the environmental purpose, act as the floodplain for the river. Plants and trees that originally occupied this area will help the ground to absorbs the water, either from the flood and the rain. This form a natural water cycle. When people cover the ground with pavement, and built building and cut off plants and trees, it will disturb the discharge of water and runoff will occur, also possibly errosion.

Theoretically, riverbank area are areas that suppose to be remain vacant, so the natural environment could optimalize their cycle. The fact nowadays, we couldn’t hardly find any vacant riverbanks in Jakarta, the same are true in ciliwungs riverbank.

The chalenge now is how to accomodate the environments needs, it is to converse the riverbank, and to accomodate people needs of house, accessibility, moreover how this solution can contribute positively to the city.

There are three main line:
The first are the disinfected line. The water that had been filtered out of the river, kept in the riverbank reservoid to remove the sediments, are pup up capilarry, then going on the second line or going back down to flow away in the river.

The second line are the pre-conditioned line. Water that had been disinfected pre conditioned through several treatment; filter: to filter out the snad and other solid contminant, flocculated to clarify the water by minerals, ph adjustment, then going in to the outlet in each residents.

The third line are the waste water treatment line. Water that had been used from daily uses susch as cooking, bath washing, watering the plants and trees even flushing toilets, going into the waste water treatment line to be treated, sedimented and disinfected before flowing down, back to the river, to flow to the ocea.

The concenpt of Building’s morfology is taken from the equilbrium tube’s. When the tube are connected, as in equilibrium tube, it only takes one time to fill the water, then automatically the water will finds its equilibrium point by filling all vacant space, until the water source stop to rushin.

The other reason of its shape, is that it enhance a large system of water “purification” to be applied vertically, so it saves horizontal spaces. Ciliwung rivers water are potential to be one of the sources of fresh water for Jakarta’s people, so first it has to be decontaminated. This tower will guard and heals the water, so that it will be able to be used for daily needs. There will be five towers, each consist of “purifier”, transportation hub, housing, offices,, public spaces, rental area and recreational function.

The purifier is a decontaminating action and pre condition so the river water would be appropriate for human daily needs, such as drinking and cooking. It is applicated through a huge capilers that also act as the building structure. These capilers is a huge shaft in whic the river water will be treated, filters, disinfected by solar reactor, flocculated.
