At Exchange Quay in Manchester, the iconic wayfinding totems have been given a new life. Designed by Jasper Sanders + Partners, the giant steel structures now act as colorful sculptures that shift with light and movement, transforming daily routes into inspiring experiences.
From Functional to Sculptural
Once painted in a single orange shade, the totems are now covered in bold tones—from acid yellow to terracotta and cobalt blue. Each face shows a different color, creating a dynamic effect as people walk by. What used to be simple signs are now art-like landmarks that change depending on the time of day and viewing angle.
Color as Identity
Every building in Exchange Quay already had its own color theme inside. Lead designer Nathalie Kenning used this as inspiration, treating each totem like a branding exercise. This way, each marker reflects its building’s character but still feels connected to the rest of the campus. The result is a lively, unified identity across the site.
Spaces for People
The project goes beyond wayfinding. Four old smoking shelters were reimagined as outdoor meeting spots, painted in shades of green and placed near cafes and services. Smoking was moved to the campus edge, freeing up the central area as a community hub where people can meet, work, or relax.
Smart and Sustainable Design
The multi-color faces also make maintenance easier. Instead of repainting an entire totem, only the affected side needs attention. This approach reduces cost, saves materials, and keeps the structures fresh and relevant. Like the businesses it serves, Exchange Quay can keep evolving with time.
With this redesign, Jasper Sanders + Partners has turned practical signage into a vibrant symbol of connection and creativity at the heart of Manchester. Their work shows how design can inspire both movement and community.
