Curve X: A Sculptural Red Office for Dusseldorf

Aerial photo of the site and the city of Düsseldorf

Curve X marks a bold architectural gesture in central Dusseldorf, where JSWD transforms a once-vacant inner-block site into a dynamic office landmark. Rising with a confident red presence, the new building redefines the spatial rhythm of Helmholtzstrasse while introducing an x-shaped plan that sets it apart from its urban context. The Cologne-based studio JSWD anchors the project with a design that merges sculptural expression, environmental considerations, and workplace adaptability.

A Red Landmark Shaped by Urban Movement

The six-story structure maintains the established street height yet distinguishes itself through its gently curving façade, which pulls inward to form a protected forecourt. This gesture highlights the main entrance and gives Curve X its signature profile. The combination of red steel panels and slender vertical strips produces an interplay of light and compression that emphasizes the flowing geometry. Large ground-floor display windows reinforce transparency, strengthening the building’s presence at street level.

An X-Shaped Plan for Workplace Flexibility

Extending from the edge of the city block toward the interior courtyard, the two arms of the building adopt a height consistent with neighboring structures. This continuity ensures a coherent urban profile while allowing the distinct x-shaped layout to organize circulation and program. A centralized access core brings together staircases, elevators, and service areas, enabling a wide range of contemporary office configurations and maximizing natural light along the perimeter.

Microclimate, Sustainability, and Resilience

The building is set back from the street and offers space, forming an inviting forecourt.

Previously occupied by surface parking, the inner courtyard has been transformed into a green outdoor space that improves the microclimate for both office users and surrounding residences. Additional parking needs are met through a two-level underground garage for cars and bicycles. The building is designed to meet KfW Efficiency House 40 standards and aims for DGNB Gold certification, supported by features including an integrated solar power system and WiredScore Gold pre-certification that ensures high digital infrastructure performance.

A Confident Contribution to Contemporary Dusseldorf

Its sweeping red façade, functional spatial core, and sustainable strategies signal a future-ready campus for businesses seeking flexibility and identity. By completing a missing piece within the block and enhancing its surroundings, the project stands as a confident addition to Dusseldorf’s evolving commercial landscape, continuing the design ethos that defines JSWD and its growing European portfolio.
