Studio Vapore has transformed an overlooked balcony at the International School of Beijing into Dragon Creche, a compact nursery for infants and toddlers of the school’s staff. Designed by Studio Vapore, the project shows how a small interior can support both everyday care and emotional connection without trying to behave like a miniature theme park, thankfully.
Located in Beijing, China, the nursery responds to a very human need: helping teacher mothers return to work while still having a calm place to feed, visit, and reconnect with their children during the school day. Instead of treating childcare as a leftover function squeezed into a leftover room, Dragon Creche gives this small space a clear spatial identity and a gentle rhythm.
A Compact Interior Organized Around Care
The nursery is arranged as a sequence of connected zones within one room, moving gradually from public to private. An entrance area provides stroller parking and cubbies, followed by a small pantry, before the space opens into the main play area. Around this central zone, quieter areas for nursing, feeding, and sleeping create a practical flow for daily routines.
Rather than dividing the interior with heavy partitions, arches and curtains define different areas while keeping the room visually open. This gives the creche flexibility, privacy, and softness at the same time. In a room with limited area, that kind of restraint matters more than adding furniture until the floor gives up, as humans often enjoy doing.
A Forest Story for Early Childhood
The visual concept is based on a forest inhabited by the school’s dragon, imagined as a friendly and calm presence. The main play area is shaped by a large felt wall illustration showing vegetation, falling leaves, soft daylight, and layered textures. The result is immersive, but not overstimulating, which is important for a nursery used by infants and toddlers.
The felt wall is not only decorative. It also works as a sensory surface, inviting children to touch, explore, and respond to changes in texture and depth. The elevated platform beside the play area extends this idea further, functioning as both a secondary play zone and a resting area where mattresses can be arranged for toddlers.
Light, Softness, and Material Atmosphere
Because the room faces west and receives limited natural light, the design introduces a central skylight to create soft, diffused illumination. This light recalls the atmosphere of a forest canopy, while suspended paper lanterns add warmth and intimacy to the main space. The lighting strategy is subtle, not the usual “make everything bright and call it cheerful” approach.
Materials are selected for comfort, safety, and acoustic control. Padded flooring, felt surfaces, large mattresses, fabric, mirrors, and artificial leather form a layered material palette. Together, they support early movement, quiet play, rest, and gentle interaction, making the interior both functional and emotionally reassuring.
Reclaiming an Overlooked School Space
Dragon Creche is part of a broader effort to turn residual school spaces into places that support everyday life. By converting an unused balcony into a meaningful nursery, the project suggests that even modest interventions can have strong social value when design begins with real needs instead of decorative noise.
For the International School of Beijing, the nursery supports staff wellbeing while creating a safe and imaginative environment for young children. For Studio Vapore, Dragon Creche continues the studio’s interest in educational interiors, children’s environments, and narrative spaces where function and atmosphere are carefully balanced.
