Living Beauty Retail Space and Treatment Spa by Odami

Odami has reimagined the typology of the traditional apothecary with the design of Living Beauty’s first brick-and-mortar location in Toronto. Located in the Christie Pits neighbourhood, the project blends curiosity, intimacy, and innovation, resulting in a retail and wellness environment that feels both timeless and contemporary. This interior identity reflects the studio’s ability to merge atmospheric design with functional detailing, elevating the client’s brand presence. More about their work can be found on Odami.

A Contemporary Apothecary Experience

Historically, apothecaries were intimate spaces for consultation and discovery, often clad in dark wood and layered with drawers. Odami transforms this narrative through a fresh lens, offering a wraparound bar as the social core of the space. Supplementary stock is stored within subtly arched product bays, creating a functional rhythm that references the old typology while asserting a modern visual identity.

Material Palette and Spatial Rhythm

Instead of traditional dark timber, the designers employed clay-toned millwork as a consistent backdrop. Breccia Oniciata marble elevates each bay into its own service counter, while rounded tambour paneling brings geometric texture. The concentric terracotta-toned porcelain tile floor sweeps across the store, guiding visitors naturally from retail into the spa.

The Spa as a Distinct Escape

Beyond the fluted glass transition, the spa adopts a contrasting identity while retaining continuity. A mint-green high-gloss cube forms the treatment rooms, interacting with mirrored millwork and vintage sconces. This interplay of reflection and light creates a luminous, restorative environment, distinct from the energetic retail floor yet harmoniously connected to it.

Celebrating Heritage with Modern Design

The project reflects Odami’s philosophy of embracing dichotomies—between heritage and modernity, subtlety and boldness. By reinterpreting the apothecary model, the design reasserts its relevance in a contemporary wellness and retail context. Ultimately, Living Beauty becomes both a tribute to history and a forward-looking model for experiential design. With Odami’s multicultural sensibility and architectural vision, the project embodies Toronto’s dynamic design dialogue.
