Tojiro Knife Gallery Osaka, designed by KATATA YOSHIHITO DESIGN (L/O), has won a Dezeen Awards 2025, selected from more than 4,300 entries across over 80 countries. The project was recognised for its conceptual clarity, craftsmanship-driven approach, and deep cultural grounding.

Retail Space Rooted in Maintenance Culture

Located in Osaka’s historic kitchenware district, the gallery reinterprets Japanese cutlery culture through a contemporary spatial language. Rather than presenting knives as static retail objects, the space integrates an open maintenance room where visitors can observe sharpening and repair by skilled craftsmen.

This transparency reflects a cultural respect for tools, longevity, and sustainable use, positioning maintenance as a visible and valued part of ownership.

Production and Retail in One Continuous System

The maintenance room is equipped with the same machines and tools used at Tojiro’s main factory in Tsubame-Sanjo. This allows the space to support everything from daily sharpening to complex repairs, blurring the boundary between production and retail.

By making these processes public, the project communicates Tojiro’s philosophy of long-term care and reinforces the idea that quality is sustained, not consumed.

Yoroi-bari Reimagined as Display Architecture

A defining architectural feature is the reinterpretation of yoroi-bari, a traditional Japanese construction technique, as a knife display system. Knives appear to float against wooden panels, held by concealed magnets and precise structural detailing.

The warm wooden interior contrasts with an armour-like stainless-steel facade, creating a cohesive language that clearly differentiates yet connects the functions of display, work, and circulation.

Design Driven by Meaning, Not Form

Rather than treating form as an objective, the design process began by identifying what the project needed to communicate. From this foundation, spatial structure, materiality, and user experience were developed in reverse.

The result is a compact retail environment where tradition and industry are structurally integrated, offering a contemporary expression of Japanese craftsmanship.
