Yangliping Performing Arts Center by Studio Zhu-Pei

Located in Dali, China, the Yangliping Performing Arts Center is a cultural complex designed by Studio Zhu-Pei. Positioned between the dramatic Cang Mountain range and the vast Lake Erhai, the project responds directly to its powerful natural and historical context. Studio Zhu-Pei approaches the site not as a neutral ground, but as a layered landscape shaped by geography, memory, and movement.

Landscape as Architectural Framework

Rather than imposing a singular object, the design grows out of the surrounding terrain. A widely cantilevered rectangular roof spans across a sequence of sunken and elevated spaces, forming a continuous architectural landscape. Beneath the roof, indoor and outdoor areas flow into one another, echoing the valleys and slopes of the nearby mountains. This approach allows the building to act as a mediator between nature and human activity.

Yin and Yang in Spatial Composition

The project draws from traditional Chinese spatial philosophy, particularly the concept of yin and yang. The strong, linear geometry of the roof contrasts with the organic, hill-like forms below, creating a balanced dialogue between order and fluidity. These oppositions are not symbolic gestures alone, but practical tools that shape circulation, light, and spatial hierarchy within the performing arts complex.

Public Spaces as Cultural Terrain

Partly sunken volumes transform into a garden-like landscape that extends seamlessly into the public theatre and amphitheater. These spaces are designed to be flexible, supporting performances, rehearsals, exhibitions, and everyday social use. By blurring boundaries between building and ground, the project offers a high level of experiential richness while maintaining strong visual and physical connections to the surrounding environment.

Contextual Design and Cultural Continuity

Dali’s historical role along the ancient Tea and Horse Road informs the project’s sensitivity to place. The preserved old town, city walls, and gate towers remain visually present within the broader landscape. Studio Zhu-Pei reinforces this continuity by avoiding monumental gestures, instead allowing form, light, and material to quietly embed the building within its cultural setting. The result is architecture that feels rooted rather than imposed.
