Noir Matiere is a residential penthouse interior designed by Boobrook at Lana Residences, Dorchester Collection, Dubai. Developed by Benjamin and Natacha Bouioukliev, the project explores how materiality and light can redefine spatial perception in a high-rise setting. Rather than competing with Dubai’s expressive skyline, Boobrook establishes a controlled and introspective interior environment that feels deliberately detached from its surroundings.
The design by Boobrook avoids superficial luxury gestures and instead focuses on spatial clarity and consistency. The result is a restrained yet powerful interior that demonstrates how reduction and precision can shape a cohesive residential experience.
Reinterpreting Brutalism Through Interior Language
The conceptual foundation of Noir Matiere lies in the reinterpretation of brutalist principles within a refined interior framework. Rather than emphasizing heaviness or monumentality, the project distills brutalism into its essential qualities: raw material honesty, clarity of form, and spatial discipline.
Darkness plays a deliberate role, not as an absence but as an active design element. It frames views, enhances depth, and creates a sense of enclosure that contrasts sharply with the openness of the surrounding city. This balance between intensity and calm defines the overall atmosphere.
Material Palette as Spatial Narrative
The interior is built upon a tightly curated selection of materials, including polished concrete, blackened oak, oxidized steel, textured plaster, and deep-toned stone. Each material is chosen for its inherent texture and its ability to respond dynamically to changing light conditions.
This limited palette eliminates visual noise while allowing subtle variations in surface and tone to emerge. Instead of decorative layering, the project relies on material authenticity to generate richness and depth throughout the space.
Light as a Structuring Element
Light functions as a central design tool in Noir Matiere. Natural daylight enters the penthouse and reveals the textures embedded in each surface, while shadows reinforce the spatial hierarchy. The interplay between light and material becomes a constantly shifting experience.
In the evening, a carefully integrated indirect lighting system maintains a controlled ambiance. This approach avoids visual disruption and ensures continuity across spaces, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on spatial cohesion rather than fragmented visual moments.
Fluid Layout and Controlled Experience
The spatial organization prioritizes fluid transitions while maintaining a clear hierarchy of functions. Circulation paths, openings, and volumes are proportioned to create a seamless sequence, allowing movement through the penthouse to feel intuitive and uninterrupted.
Ornamentation is deliberately excluded. Instead, attention is directed toward construction details and the relationship between solid and void. This disciplined approach enables the interior to maintain a consistent identity, functioning as a quiet retreat above the intensity of Dubai’s urban environment.
Ultimately, Boobrook demonstrates through Noir Matiere that luxury does not require excess. By focusing on material precision, controlled lighting, and spatial clarity, Benjamin and Natacha Bouioukliev deliver a penthouse that is both restrained and deeply immersive.
